For the fifth time, Hospice of Yuma's dinner/dance has been named Best Charity Event, and its organization has been named Best Place to Volunteer Your Services.

"We appreciate the support from the community," said Sharon Chessum, director of fund development and marketing. "It's the people in Yuma that make Hospice the organization that it is.

"Hospice cares for people who are in the final stages of their terminal illness, and our goal is to control the pain and symptoms and to make each day the best it can be ... We support the family and the patient and treat the person rather than the disease, and our focus is on quality of life."

She said people like to volunteer at Hospice because "we're a very friendly bunch, whether it be a volunteer coming for patients in their homes, or working in our thrift shop or here in our office. And I think a lot of people have been touched by Hospice with family or friends and want to give back."

The dinner/dance event is popular because it's a family event that allows an entire family to enjoy the roping, dance, tri-tip dinner, chili cook-off, concessions and more for the affordable price of one ticket, she said. And the proceeds are used for patient care.
